The main character of the story is Starr Carter. Starr is constantly switching between two worlds of living in a black neighborhood and going to school at high end high prep school. Starr faces many challenges throughout the novel starting with her childhood friend's death, Khalil Harris. After driving home one night after a party, Khalid gets pulled over by a police officer and is shot three times making Starr the witness of this whole event. After Khalil's death, rumors spread that Khalil dealt drugs and participated in the King Lords gang, placing his character in question. We see many challenges that Starr faces throughout society, ethnicity, and fear of judgment. I loved the overall message of the book. It teaches us that if you believe in something you need to use your voice and speak up! Not only do we see that in the book, but we also have seen this being shown in real life during the BLM protests that were going on for so long giving the people a chance to have their voices heard. I learned so much from this book; I recommend it to all.
