A murderous android discovers itself in "All Systems Red", a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial intelligence. In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth

Murderbot Diaries Book 1 - Told from the perspective of a cynical artificial construct designed to provide hired security, this novella is fast paced and action oriented throughout much of the story. At its core however, this is really a story based in humanity and compassion. Come for the sci-fi, stay for the heart.

All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) is incredibly unique in its concepts and excellent in its execution. Novels told by an AI are normally dry and lacking; because Murderbot is a hacked system, the feelings and emotions are more human, surprisingly enough. This novel was the winner of multiple award and made its way onto many prestigious bestselling lists for good reason! This novella is an incredible story of what it means to be human, and how easily it is for some to completely disregard their own humanity in the face of profit. A novella that will make readers think about what makes them truly happy and if it is actually enough.

Good lord, what a fun read! This quick little novella was an absolute blast. Clever, funny, and weird, with a dark sense of humor and an intriguing narrator who's far more relatable than anyone called a "murderbot" should be. So glad this is just the first in a series- I'll be saving the rest for when I need a good pick-me-up.

Great intro to this novella series. Cant wait for Murderbot's next journey.

This was a fun, snarky, intense first person view into a space world of humans and robots. Not my usual cup of tea but well written and enjoyable.

A good story, and the start of a series too! Just a warning, the amount of swearing increases with each book in the series. 90/100

I’ll confess, after hearing all the buzz for this series, I really wasn’t interested in reading it. I don’t know why, since it seems right in my wheelhouse, maybe I was simply tired of robot uprisings and A.I.s gone rogue. How wrong I was. Martha Wells truly does a yeoman’s work in creating a compelling and interesting new take on an A.I. finding its place in the world (er, space). I look forward to reading the further adventures of Murderbot, and only hope they contain all the charm and insight of this first short novella.

I loved pretty much everything about this book. I loved the characters - Murderbot especially, but all of the humans were pretty great too. I loved the plot; it zipped right along but didn't feel rushed. I loved the way the setting was built, which is a heck of an accomplishment for a book as brief as this. I'm really looking forward to the next in this series.

Recommended by Yerim because I liked the Ancillary series.

Yes, talk to Murderbot about its feelings. The idea was so painful I dropped to 97 percent efficiency. I’d rather climb back into Hostile One’s mouth.
