Excellent 3rd book in the “Mo and Dale” mystery series, one of the best humorous and exciting juvenile fiction series being written now. The first book, *Three Times Lucky*, was a Newbery Honor Book and should be at the top of your reading list if you have any interest in children’s fiction or mysteries.

“Mo” is Miss Moses LoBeau, “a sixth grader in her prime,” to quote Mo. She lives in Tupelo Landing, North Carolina, population 149, each of whom seems to show up at the tiny café where Mo lives with her adoptive parents (although the relationship is more complicated than that). “Dale” is her best friend, Dale Earnhardt Johnson III, whose mother is a sweetheart but whose father Macon is a no-good professional criminal currently in jail for various crimes committed in book one. Since Dale and Mo put him in jail with their detective work, Macon is somewhat resentful of the family dynamic. When he busts out of jail under mysterious circumstances, the town gets in an uproar and Dale and Mo and their friends are terrified that Macon will want revenge.

All of the wonderfully colorful Tupelo Landing characters are back with a couple of new ones added, especially troublesome out-of-town reporter, Capers Dylan, hot to make Macon Johnson’s escape front page news all over the state. The real star is Turnage’s creative language and humor, through the original voice and character of Mo LoBeau. These books would be great read-alouds for 5th-8th grade, although you might have to practice a bit not to choke up laughing while you read.

A fun new book in this series! Each book seems to get a bit better and more interesting, while still staying true to Mo's voice.

LOVED THIS BOOK! I loved all three books, Three Times Lucky, The ghosts of Tupelo Landing and The Odds of Getting Even. It was very clever and Mo, Dale and Harm are very good detectives!

A cute third installment in this mystery series! The first book: Two Times Lucky, received a Newbery Honor. If small town southern charm, a cast of quirky characters, and a plucky heroine are your thing, be sure to check this series out!

The Desperado Detectives must look for stolen goods, find a lost police car, uncover a secret identity, and prevent murder in this hilarious sequel to Three Times Lucky and The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing. Oh, and find homes for Queen Elizabeth's puppies, do their homework and help run the cafe at the same time. Whew!
